List of must have cool stuff

Life Update

I haven't done one of these for a while now. Lets shortcut the details though shall we.

The Suck List
Work - *sigh*
Poker - Pretty much done.
Weight - *sigh*
Accomplishments - *sigh*
$$$ - *sigh*
Games - *yawn*... I may have grown up or something but nothing appeals to me anymore
Sunburns (x7) - *I plan to die of other things before skin cancer can even have a chance*
My car - Damn thing is falling apart and I want to get an classic American muscle car, god damnit! I want to step on the gas and really GO. I don't want to feel like such a pecker head dweeb in my "makes sense" car.
Death - Two of my best friends are dead. Yup. Dead. Suck. One died a while ago and the other just left.

Alright, now for the not-so-much-suck stuff.
I've been working my ass off on a new framework designed to... actually I'm not sure what... but it's supposed to help developers get together and make games. It's been a lot of work though so I'm getting burnt AND there are so many different services and applications that it sort of makes my head spin to think about it. Not to mention how many service hoops I have to jump through in order to test a feature/bug. While I sound a little down about it, I'm pretty excited too. The entire project started out as a tournament system for an online version of the Cathedral board game. One idea kept leading to another and before I realized it, the tournament system was replaced with a full blown portal concept. I've had some other big design concepts which I had planned to do in C# but I'm seriously considering these ideas as part of this "portal" using Byond as the platform. There are so many apps and services that most of it is a long ways off. Once I get some core stuff going, I'll post more about it.

Alright what else?
- Netflix still sucks mostly. I got bored of watching movies. Although I did go and watch Star-Trek in a dinner/movie place which was cool.
- Pandora is hardly playing any lame music for me anymore so it's like a loop of the same music with hardly any new stuff. :|
- Facebook is the dumbest thing ever and I'm pretty much done with it although you have no choice but to check it don't you...

That's it. Most of my eggs are in the same basket right now and I'm glad for it.

Review: Koss - portaPro headphones

A couple weeks back, I did a quick and somewhat hasty search for "awesome+light" headphones. The result I ended up reading up on was the "Koss - portaPro". I wanted a pair of lightweight headphones because my heavy studio head phones break my neck. Besides, I needed a set for work and I didn't want big clunky things. After receiving my order from (through) Amazon, I was a little disappointed. For some reason, I thought the headphones were larger. Either image trickery or I just couldn't determine the size because there was nothing in the photo to help determine relative size. I think the jack plug-in was so small (relative to normal jack size) that made the headphones appear larger. The other reason I decided to get these was because of two selling points.

1. They haven't changed the design in 20 years or something crazy like that.
2. They have a really cool retro design and someone referenced 'Tron' as an example.

I thought.. ok, cool.

Alright, now for the main feedback.
1. Sound is great. No complaints at all. I listen to rock, industrial, heavy metal stuff.
2. The cord is a wee short but I'm not having a problem due to my current config.
3. The look has not drawn any comments yet so its not that cool and the retro look is actually very mild. The blue plastic parts are not that exciting.
4. The adjustable head strap actually sucks.
        - I have to re-adjust every time I take it on and off. Without a hat, the adjusters do get close to pulling on your hair. I have a shaven head and I have to adjust big, put them on, and then adjust smaller to avoid the scraping it does across my head.
        - Each ear phone also has an adjustment switch that says Firm - - - Light. After a session or two, I realized my ears were hurting from the squeeze pressure. I took them off and tried the Light setting which appears to disengage the base of the headphones from the metal band which allows for a looser fit. This does work but the toggle switches keep ending up back on "Firm" for some reason. I think this happens as I take them on and off.
        - I read some comments somewhere that someone taped the adjusters so they didn't move. This might be the right solution especially if it prevents the toggle switch from changing.
5. They don't really cancel any outside noise at all. I can hear everything around me clear as day when listening to mild songs.
6. One last thing. The wires that split away from the headphones to the single line don't annoy me. I think that's important.

Overall, are these worth the 30$+ I spent. I don't think so. $19.99 would have been a "happy" price. You could argue about the quality of sound they produce but I have no way to compare against all brands. They sound good but you never know what your missing unless you sample a bunch of tracks across a number of sets. We mustn't forget that while they haven't changed their design in 20 years, we are... and with scotch tape.

Do I recommend these... sure, if you can find a good deal somewhere.
ts

disclaimer - the 20 year unchanged design is a rough guesstimate but it's something like that. I've also only used them for a couple of weeks now so I don't know how long they will hold up. A couple pretty nasty accidental tugs have occurred because of my chair and they didn't break.

If your interested, this is where I got mine.

LACIE External Hard Drive USB 2.0 750gb

My experience with the LACIE External Hard Drive USB 2.0 750gb is sucking.

#1. When the drive is NOT working it speratically makes a bunch of very loud paging sounds as if it is going to die at any minute. When it's actually being used, it makes very little noise.

#2. It's contantly paging while not being used for unknown reasons. I haven't figured out the cause is but it's major noise polution.

#3. While planning to move all folders from the drive to my local machine so I can return it, the move just failed for no reason. It would not move files from the drive. I had to move one folder at a time. Wow... I actually have to navigate down into the folder structure to move indivdual sub-folders. This sucks. I didn't have this problem with my old external hard drive.

#4. The blue light is distracting as it is flashing all the time regardless of being used. You can just point your drive away from you or hide it but, that is kinda lame. I don't know if you can escape that with any drive. I don't recall being distracted by my old external drive.

Fuck me. The drive is failing to move shit off the hard drive now. It is corrputing my data as I write this.
Fucking great! I just got a message saying I needed to format the drive before I could use it. Random files are corrupt across the disk. I have to copy individual folders and skip over files it can't copy.

Now this is taking me forever as it is failing all over the place which causes massive delays in the copy process.
aarrrrgggg...

Alright. Thankfully, this happend only a couple weeks after buying that pile of crap. I only had one updated project on the drive. Everything else was backed up from my last external catstrophe.

Maybe external drives are not the way to go...  :|

Trying to format the damn thing now so I can return it but I think thats failing as well.

Angry about everything and nothing

myspace sucks because its just a spam fest but at least its a private spam fest.

facebook sucks even more because its a fucking stupid fest but ITS NOT private. Its only matter of time before awkward photos and comments start showing up. I'm just sick with anticipation.

What we need is the next stupid fucking thing to make our lives even more miserable for no fucking reason.

I hate this this shit. It's the same group of asshats who think that because a large group of idiots has the same idea, it surely can't be wrong.

Hollywood is good. The people on the TV are important. I need stuff.

The devil snacks on my soul.

I'm angry at the world but I don't know why. That's a lie of course. I know all the reasons but nobody has been a very bad listener.

Fuck shit.

Amores Perros

This was one of those movie titles and covers that you choose as a last and final resort. I figured the worst but it ended up being pretty good. This was a really interesting story even if it was loooooooong. I don't know what to say except, if you have a dark and slow night, this is a good flick to watch. It's not perfect, in fact.... it's really long, and probably should have had a large portion of stuff cut out. The story is totally rich at heart but ends up being pretty shallow in the end. At least it tried.

Anyway, I say give it a chance.

Interests
If I invited you as a friend it's not because I'm some random freak. It's because I have interest in what you are about or what you do. It will most likely be because of game design or music creation. In some cases, I just liked what I read and wanted to let the person know but they had no contact info so the only way to communicate my appreciation is by inviting you as a friend. That being said.

I enjoy making music, listening to music, playing games, web and social technology, poker, tools, automation, games, xbox 360, testing, and designing games.

Latest Project Info

I finished my big efficiency project but licensing and protection stopped me in my tracks. I'm trying to raise the money to buy WinLicense now. In the meantime, I'm starting to ponder my next move. I learned a lot while building my last tool and especially about XML and Dynamic UI. I'm considering going after my task management project as it would benefit all my other projects. I've yet to find a decent task management system that I liked and that wasn't overly complex and convoluted. So far, it's that or my space RTS game in the BYOND engine. Actually, I'm going to dig through all my old projects and see what jumps out at me. I'm starting to finish my projects eh... watch out world!

Was checking out your dungeon crawler project. I must say it looks interesting. Was curious as to what engine you were using for this paticular project? I didn't seem to notice you mention that. If you are still activily involved in development I hope to see later results. Great job!
